A Light Filled Modern Kitchen

The open plan space enjoys clean lines and exceptional views from the picture window – garnering fantastic feedback from everybody who has seen it.

“It’s perfect,” says Merianne. “I’m from Finland and the look we have is definitely Nordic – modern but cosy. We needed space, storage and light so I couldn’t be happier.”

The couple called in KBS to quote, along with a few other companies, but were especially impressed by their design ideas and experience. “Bob knows what he’s doing,” says Merianne, “and we struck a good working balance. We had some very fixed ideas, but for other things we were flexible. Bob was able to tell us what would and wouldn’t work, and more importantly, make good suggestions as alternatives.”

The first stage of the work was to pass planning, and then employ builders. As the house is built on a hill, the work meant incorporating extra-deep foundations, downward-facing drainage and a 6m steel beam to support the structure.
Once the majority of the work was done, KBS came in to fit out the kitchen and utility room, with their contribution taking 3 – 4 weeks, all whilst working in tandem and around the builders.

“It felt like a long time but was worth the wait,” says Merianne. “It was really exciting seeing it all take shape. I love how the worksurface runs straight to the window with no sill – this creates extra space that’s useful and it blends inside to outside. One key requirement was to incorporate a space for a dog bed for our two dogs into the design – you can hardly get them out of their bed now!”
